The Activities of 10th Dhul Hijjah [The Day of Sacrifice]

The pilgrim will have left Muzdalifah for Mina before sunrise. Once he arrives Mina he has the following 4 or 5 tasks to perform on this day,the Day of Sacrifice [i.e. Yawm Nahr]:

  1. Al-Ramyu [i.e. Throwing] at Jamrah Al-‘Aqabah;
  2. Al-dhabh [i.e. Offering the Hadya Sacrifice];
  3. A l - h a l q /A l - Ta q s i r [ i . e . Shaving/Cutting the Hair short];
  4. Tawaf Al-Ifadah, which may be followed by:
  5. Al-Sa’ay for Hajj, which comes after Tawaf Al-Ifadah and applies only to the following;
    pilgrims offering Tamattu’ and
    pilgrims offering Ifrād or Qirān, who did not make the Sa’ay after their Tawaf Qudum

It is best to perform these tasks in this order on this Day of Sacrifice as the Prophet [s.a.w.s] did so. However, there is no harm should a pilgrim change the order. If it is not feasible for the pilgrim to perform the Tawaf on this day, it is permissible for him to delay it preferably not beyond the Ayyam Al-Tashriq, i.e. the 3 days of camping at Mina, except for excuses such as ill-health and menstruation.S

  1. Al-Ramyu [Throwing] at Jamrah Al-‘Aqabah:
    • Al-Jamrah Al-‘Aqabah, also called Al-Jamrah Al-Kubra, is the Jamrah closest to Makkah and farthest from Mina;
    • If feasible for him the pilgrim, whilst facing the Jamrah, should place the Ka’abah on his left and Mina on his right; [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
    • The pilgrim throws seven pebbles, one at a time. At each thro, he says: “Allahu Akbar” i.e “Allah is the Greatest”.
    • During the throwing of the pebble, the pilgrim should humble himself and bring the reverence of Allah to his heart;
    • He should avoid causing harm to fellow pilgrims;
    • The pilgrim must avoid what a great many ignorant pilgrims do of throwing large pebbles, shoes, or throwing all the seven pebbles together. Likewise, he must avoid making obscene speech and curses. The Prophet [s.a.w.s] said: “The Tawaf at the House, and at Al-Safa and Al-Marwa, and the Throwing at the Jamrahs have been instituted exclusively for the remembrance of Allah.”
    • The pilgrim must ensure that the pebble he has thrown hits the Jamrah. It would therefore be best for him to move and stand closest to the Jamrah;
    • The time for the throw on this day commences from the forenoon;
    • The Talbiyyah comes to an end with the pilgrim’s last throw at Jamrah Al-‘Aqabah;
    • The time for the throw is from the forenoon of the Day of Sacrifice to its sunset.
  2. Al-Zabh [i.e. Offering the Hadya Sacrifice]:
    • The types of animal fit for the Hadya, their features, and how to kill them have been described in textbooks of Fiqh. Pilgrims should do well to consider these.
    • The Islamic Development Bank and the World Assembly of Muslim Youths have programmes that organize the purchase of appropriate animals and their slaughter on behalf of the pilgrims at the right time and place. Pilgrims should make enquiries about this and avail themselves of the opportunities and convenience the programmes offer them. They should not allowed themselves to be swindled by some people that may be going about to collect money in order to buy cheaper animal for them.
  3. Al-halq/Al-Taqsir [i.e. Shaving/Cutting the Hair short]:

    This has been described in detail earlier. Please refer to the appropriate section in this Handbook.

    When the pilgrim throws at Jamrah Al-‘Aqabah, offers the Hadya sacrifice, and shaves or cuts his hair short, he attains the First/Minor Release from all the restrictions of Ihram, except sexual intercourse and its antecedents. The pilgrim cleanses himself and puts on his best customary clothes. It is Sunnah for him to use perfume before proceeding to Makkah to perform Tawaf Al-Ifadah. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

  4. Tawaf and Sa’ay

    These have each been described in detail earlier. Please refer to the appropriate sections in this Handbook. However, there is no Raml [jogging] and Idtiba’ [exposing the right shoulder] in Tawaf Al-Ifadah.

    When the pilgrim performs the Tawaf, and if applicable to him the Sa’ay as well, he attains the Second/Major Release. Henceforth, all Ihram restrictions cease, including sexual intercourse.

It is recommended for the pilgrim to perform Salah Al-Zhur in Makkah before he returns to Mina on 10th Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Sacrifice, and the Day of Eid Al-Adha.

After Tawaf Al-Ifadah, the pilgrim returns to Mina to spend the 2 or 3 days of Ayyam Al-Tashriq The 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah.
