The 9th of Dhul Hijjah (The Day of ‘Arafah): Heading to ‘Arafah

  • When the sun has risen on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the pilgrim proceeds from Mina to ‘Arafah. It is recommended, if feasible, that he encamps/settles on his way at Namirah until just after midday, as the Prophet [s.a.w.s] did. Namirah is a place close to ‘Arafah but it is not part of it.
  • Just after midday, the Imam makes the Khutbah and offers AlZuhr and Al-‘Asr together in the time of Al-Zuhr. Each of the two is shortened. A rationale for this is to free the pilgrim and enable him concentrate on the Talbiyyah, supplications, repentance, and the remembrance of Allah. For this reason and the Sunnah of the Prophet [s.a.w.s], the pilgrim must not fast on the Day of ‘Arafah.
  • If a pilgrim misses the congregation, he could observe the two Salahs alone or in congregation with other people around him, as described above.
