The three types of Ihram

  1. Ifrād: It is the intention in the heart, at the Miqat, to offer Hajj only. In his Talbiyyah, the intending pilgrim will concurrently say, whilst standing and facing the Qiblah:
    لبيك بحج“
In response to Your call and commemoration of Your service with Hajj.” Thereupon, he commences the Talbiyyah.
The pilgrim shall remain in the state of ihram until the activities of the Hajj are completed.
  2. Tamattu: It is the intention in the heart, at the Miqat, to offer Umrah in the months of Hajj. In his Talbiyyah, he will concurrently say, whilst standing and facing the Qiblah:
    لبيك بعمرة“
In response to Your call and commemoration of Your service with Umrah.” Thereupon, he commences the Talbiyyah.
Once he completes the Umrah, he is released from the restrictions of the Ihram. On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, he takes bath, apply perfume on his body, prays, and makes the intention to offer the Hajj. In his Talbiyyah, we will concurrently say, whilst standing and facing the Qiblah:
    لبيك بحج“
“In response to Your call and commemoration of Your service with Hajj.” Thereupon, he commences the Talbiyyah.
Tamattu is so called because the pilgrim who offers it enjoys, between the 'Umrah and Hajj, freedom from the restrictions of"Ihram".
  3. Al-Qirān: It is the intention in the heart, at the Miqat, to offer both Hajj and cUmrah together (i.e. the pilgrim enters into the state of Ihram for both Hajj and 'Umrah together). In his Talbiyyah, he will concurrently say, whilst standing and facing the Qiblah:

    لبيك بحج وعمرة

“In response to Your call and commemoration of Your service with Hajj and ‘Umrah.” Thereupon, he commences the Talbiyyah.

Alternatively, one may make the intention for cUmrah alone at the Miqat. However, when he arrives Makkah, he appends the Hajj to it before he commences its Tawaf.

    Allah says:

"Whoever performs 'Umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [should offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] – should then fast for three days during Hajj and for seven days when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram." Al- Baqarah 2:196

Pilgrims who offer either Qirān or Tamattu' must offer a sacrificial animal as to give thanks to Allah, Who has helped them offer both 'Umrah and Hajj during the period of Hajj in the same trip to the Holy land. But if they couldn't afford a sacrificial animal, they should fast for three days during the Hajj and seven days when they return home.

The activities of those who offer Ifrad and those who offer Qiran are exactly the same, except that the latter must make a sacrifice.
